Irrigation system design is complex.  It is also the last phase of a project design.  Irrigation systems are designed to for a specific landscape layout.  Therefore, if you modify your soft-scape or hard-scape then often you will need to alter your irrigation system to reflect these changes.  An efficient and properly designed irrigation system must factor in four major components.

The first component is defining the areas that have different water requirements.  Turf and planted areas are a good example as turf typically requires more water.  Having a poor irrigation design where both areas are zoned together results in being forced to over water one area to adequately water the other.  In the past this poor design practice was common however with today’s rising water costs and the need for conservation this in never acceptable.

The second component is the hydraulic design which refers to sizing the zones, so they function properly based on the available water volume and pressure.   The types of heads, pipe sizes, and number of zones all factor into this stage of the design.  In addition, there is a cost component that relates to the number of zones.  As this number increases so does the material cost to the contractor.  This often results in irrigation systems being installed with zones that are too large thus pushing the limits of the available water volume and pressure.   We call these systems “over designed” and this is typically an expensive problem to fix after the fact.

The third component equates more to the landscape design than the irrigation and that is operating costs.  Irrigation systems are unique in the fact that a single years operating costs can easily exceed the installation cost.  In many cases spending a little more in the initial installation can result in large returns on investment.  We will often use our water cost software to preform mock up scenarios for different landscape designs.  It’s like looking at the gas mileage before you but the new car.

The final component to consider during the design phase is what will the watering schedule be, and can an adequate schedule be implemented during watering restrictions for the water municipality.  This is typically only an issue for commercial and large residential systems however if this issue applies to you then we can provide you with solutions.  The key is to address the issue in the design phase and not after.
